The Night of Decree: Better Than a Thousand Months
Within the final ten nights of Ramadan lies a treasure of unimaginable spiritual value: LAYLAT AL-QADR, also known as the Night of Decree or the Night of Power. Allah (SWT) explicitly states in the Quran that worship during this single night is greater in reward than worshiping for a thousand months (over 83 years of continuous devotion).
It was on this magnificent night that the Holy Quran was first sent down from the heavens to the Earth. As described in Surah Al-Qadr, the angels, along with the Angel Jibreel (Gabriel), descend to the earth by Allah's permission, bringing absolute peace until the break of dawn. Seeking out LAYLAT AL-QADR during the odd-numbered nights of the last Ashra (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, and 29th) is the ultimate pursuit of a believer.
Because the exact date of LAYLAT AL-QADR is hidden, Muslims are encouraged to exert maximum effort throughout all the final ten nights. Here are 7 powerful actions to secure the immense blessings of this night:
Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) once asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): "O Messenger of Allah, if I know which night is LAYLAT AL-QADR, what should I say during it?" The Prophet ﷺ advised her to recite this beautiful and profound dua:
“O Allah, You are forgiving and love forgiveness, so forgive me.”
This dua focuses entirely on 'Afw (complete pardoning), which means Allah completely erases the sin as if it never existed, rather than just covering it up. It is the ultimate request a believer can make on the Night of Decree.
How do we ensure our children understand and benefit from LAYLAT AL-QADR?
Final Reflection: LAYLAT AL-QADR is a divine gift of mercy and a chance for a completely clean slate. Do not let these nights pass by in distraction. Stand in prayer, raise your hands in sincere supplication, and beg the Most Forgiving for His pardon. May Allah allow us all to witness this beautiful night and accept our worship. Ameen.
