Start your meal with the name of Allah

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَعَلَى بَرَكَةِ اللَّهِ

Bismillāh wa 'alā barakatillāh
Reference: Sunan Ibn Majah / Al-Hakim

Why this Dua?

This beautiful supplication combines two essential elements: beginning in Allah's name (Bismillah) and seeking His blessings (Barakah). It transforms the simple act of eating into an act of worship.

Common Questions from Parents

What if I forget to recite the Dua before eating?

If you forget at the start, recite this when you remember: "Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu" (In the name of Allah at the beginning and at the end). This covers the entire meal.

Teacher's Insight: Teaching this "remedy dua" to children is excellent because it prevents them from feeling discouraged if they forget. It turns a mistake into another opportunity for reward!
Is "Bismillah" enough, or do we need the full version?

Saying just "Bismillah" (In the name of Allah) is sufficient to fulfill the Sunnah. However, adding "wa 'ala barakatillah" is better as it specifically asks for blessings (Barakah) in the food.

Does this apply to snacks and drinks too?

Yes! A Muslim remembers Allah before consuming anything—whether it is a full dinner, a small snack, or a glass of water. It keeps us in a state of continuous gratitude.
